Montréal Metro
● Metro is the term that is being used for subway in Montréal. The opening of the Metro of Montréal's first line goes back to 1966. Since then many lines and new stations have been added to the circuit. The most recent change is a new line that is going to connect the metro to the north shore, Laval, which is supposed to be operational in 2006. I once read somewhere that Montréal's metro is unique in the world because it is the only metro that the whole circuit runs on tires and it is all underground. The reason they decided to go with tires and not rails was that back then they did not have the technology to make it safe for the buildings under which the metro was supposed to operate. The vibration caused by the trains would damage the buildings, and since the metro was passing under a lot of important building in downtown Montréal, they decided to go with the safest way, which was the tire system. It was done by the help of - not so hard to guess - French engineers.
